ODESSA, Ukraine, Sept 24-27. The Ukrainian National Championship for the Platu 25 one-design class drew 21 boats to the Odessa Racing Yacht Club on the Black Sea. Ten races were sailed. The first two days were sailed in light 6-10 knot winds, while the final day saw the wind kick up to 16-20 knots with waves.
Rodin Luka, creator of the L30 One-Design and past Ukrainian Olympic sailor, took the series, beating the second-place boat by six points. Third place went to Volodimir Bindyugin, who won the first two races of the series sailing his boat REBEL. Both Luka and Bindyugin sailed with full inventories of UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive sails. The REBEL teams was very happy with how fast their boat was with their UK Sailmakers sails. “We race on the Dnieper River in the city of Dnipro, so we don’t have a lot of practice sailing in waves. On the windy last day, we had our worst race,” said Bindyugin.
The UK Sailmakers loft in Ukraine has been working to develop fast sails for the Platu 25 for years. Alexander Muhkin and his son Alexander are happy to offer Ukrainian sailors fast sails built locally at a reasonable price. They can fine tune each set of sails to match each teams’ crew weight, mast bend and most prevalent sailing conditions.
